How to Travel on a Budget and Avoid Debt
Hey friends,
Hope you’re all well. With May here and summer planning starting, I wanted to share a fun travel post. I love to travel but also try to stay within a spending plan and a budget. Last year I visited Tennessee, Arizona, and local nearby spots. Next up: Gig Harbor, Washington, and plans for Colorado and a return to the South. Where are you going this summer? I always love to hear where others have been or plan to go.
Here are some practical tips to travel without overspending.
How to Travel on a Budget
Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive. With a few smart strategies, it’s possible to explore new destinations without breaking the bank. Here are seven effective ways to travel on a budget.
1. Pay with Cash verses Going into Debt
Save for your trip and pay with cash. I got rid of my credit card and it was the best choice I ever made. Using credit and debt for travel makes you spend more and pay interest. I learned this the hard way: in my 30s I charged a Europe trip, and it was the worst decision I made.
2. Travel During Off-Peak Seasons
Avoiding peak travel times such as holidays and school vacations can save money on flights, hotels, and attractions. Off-season travel also means fewer crowds and a more authentic experience. I usually travel in September and October when kids go back to school and also late Spring.
3. Choose Budget-Friendly Accommodation and Travel with Others.
One way I save money is traveling with others and share the expenses of hotels, housing and accommodations. Platforms offering shared accommodations or home exchanges can provide affordable and unique lodging options. Booking flights and accommodations early often leads to better deals. Flexibility with travel dates, destinations, and even airports can significantly reduce costs. Use fare comparison tools and set alerts for price drops.
4. Use Public Transportation
Instead of taxis or rental cars, use local buses, trains, or metro systems. Many cities offer travel passes or discount cards for tourists, making public transport both economical and convenient.
5. Enjoy meals out but on a budget.
I love enjoying the free breakfast and coffee the hotels usually offer. Be sure to grab some of the fruit, granola etc for snacks. At your destination, buy bottled water, tuna packets, protein bars, and other snacks at a grocery store. Save money by skipping alcohol and dessert at every meal. Choose mostly budget-friendly places and splurge on one or two nicer meals.
6. Take Advantage of Free Activities
Many destinations offer free attractions such as museums, parks, walking tours, and cultural events. Research local calendars and community websites to find free or low-cost experiences.
7. Pack Smart and Avoid Extra Fees
Traveling light helps avoid baggage fees and makes moving between destinations easier. Bring essentials like reusable water bottles, snacks, and travel-sized toiletries to cut down on unnecessary purchases.
This is honestly my hardest one. I'm an overpacker—I want every outfit for every event.
Final Thoughts
Budget travel is about making thoughtful choices and prioritizing experiences over luxury. With careful planning and an open mind, it’s possible to see the world without spending a fortune.
